The manufactoring
workshop

"We just can't keep our hands off acetate."

Come on in to our hallowed halls. We are glad that you are here! Have you ever wondered how glasses are actually made? This much we can reveal at this point: the devil is in the details. But more on that in a moment, because we're taking you on a tour of our transparent factory.

For the complex production of our glasses, precise machine use and careful handwork are essential. Our eyewear makers therefore need not only a steady hand and a sharp eye, but also a lot of tact and experience.

FUNK Brillenmanufaktur - Brillen Handmade in Germany

In the following, we present some of the total of up to 170 work steps that are required before a finished pair of glasses can leave our manufactory.

It all depends on the right format

At the beginning of every acetate frame is the cutting of our raw material to the appropriate format. In addition, the optical course for further processing is set here. If we do not work with self-laminated or vintage plates from our own warehouse, then we get our cotton acetate primarily from a traditional company from Lombardy.

All a matter of form

Both the inner and outer shape of the glasses are created on the good old CNC milling machine. How good that the robust machine from the heyday of eyewear production in Germany is still running today, as if it had never stood still.

We at FUNK are reviving the craft of eyewear making, so we are especially pleased to be able to work on the original machines.

Our drums spin and spin and spin ...

Whoever enters our manufactory is greeted by the steady and tireless roar of our polishing drums. Our glasses go through a total of four grinding and polishing stages and this takes several days on average.

Depending on the granules, natural oils or pastes, the frames are given a glossy or matte surface finish in addition to the material compaction.

Man vs. machine

High gloss is not enough for us, so we give our glasses by hand in the truest sense of the word "the finishing touch". Every move must be perfect, because hand polishing is an art in itself.

Because we like to look very closely, we subject the frames to continuous quality control.

Rivet - hit - sunk

A hinge is only as strong as its weakest rivet! That's why we place particular emphasis on precision fit when riveting the center section and brackets. Even if it seems simple at first glance; special dexterity is required to hit the sweet spot.

.

Hello, my name is …

For us, glasses are not just any numbers, we at FUNK call all our glasses by name. Emperors, kings and ancestors were and are godfathers for our models. Who does not like to wear a "Florentine", or a "Berthold" on the nose? In addition to the collection, the name, the color and the size, we also print the wonderful claim "Handmade in Germany" on the temple. And we are happy about that every day.

The connection is ideal

We could now give you a 20-minute lecture on the correct temple stop. Instead, we'll just say: perfectly executed, it makes the glasses look like a single piece and contributes significantly to the usual FUNK wearing comfort.

Please do not lose your frame

During final assembly, all the components we have lovingly crafted are joined together to create the final eyeglass frame. The care taken during the development and manufacturing process pays off in the end when all the previous work steps mesh like cogs.
