The beauty of nature – captured forever in a pair of glasses
Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that work the most magic. At FUNK/SCHUSTER Eyewear, we are proud to present our capsule collection ‘Colours of Nature’, initiated by Sashee Schuster and manufactured entirely in our eyewear factory. Here, the fleeting beauty of nature is preserved for eternity – as a unique statement on your face. The idea behind it: Sashee Schuster, the driving force behind this collection, loves flowers and has always found it a shame that their beauty is so fleeting. With an eyewear manufacturer behind her that offered room for experimentation, she came across a fascinating technique from the 1950s: glasses in which silk was laminated between two acetate plates.
Inspired by this, Sashee began to experiment. She softened transparent acetate with acetone, carefully placed pressed flowers inside, and pressed everything into a new sheet. The idea of preserving flowers and other natural materials for eternity was born – a vision so far-reaching that she imagines an alien finding her glasses in a thousand years and bringing the preserved flowers back to life. The colours of nature as an expression of your personality – earthiness and art on your face: ‘Colours of Nature’ is more than just a collection of glasses. It is a tribute to nature itself.
The idea is that the most beautiful colours that nature produces – from bright cornflowers and delicate meadow flowers to filigree feathers and textured seeds – have a direct effect on the wearer's face and underline their personality. Nature should act as colour and a daily companion. Solid acetate frames are best suited for these special natural laminations, as they show off the incorporated materials to their best advantage and keep them stable.
The materials and their stories:
The natural materials for the collection are selected and prepared with the utmost care: first, they are dried and pressed.
Sashee Schuster often collects flowers and plants from her own garden and presses them in thick books. She also obtains special ingredients from regional herb and tea merchants.
She has a particularly emotional connection to a bridal bouquet, whose dried flowers she was allowed to preserve in a unique pair of glasses for a happy bride – an unforgettable keepsake for eternity.
Fans of the collection even send her herbs they have collected themselves to inspire Sashee to create new laminations. All natural materials are collected and sourced sustainably.
Craftsmanship perfection from our factory – from raw materials to finished glasses:
From the initial idea to the finished glasses, the entire ‘Colours of Nature’ process takes place entirely at the FUNK eyewear factory.
Sashee Schuster's learning process in eyewear design at FUNK enables her to realise her diverse lamination ideas and experiment extensively. Here, the prepared natural materials are carefully laminated between two acetate plates. This process is a real challenge, as it is crucial to ensure a durable lamination without air bubbles – a requirement that can lead to rejects. Not all natural materials are suitable for this process, and even when milling, the correct, symmetrical and regular part of the plate must be selected for the middle section of the glasses.
This fully in-house production enables rapid implementation of ideas, intensive testing of materials and pure craftsmanship. It also contributes to a low carbon footprint and the regionality of our production.
A special aspect of sustainability is the circular economy: all acetate scraps produced during manufacturing are reused and pressed into new acetate sheets, which can then be used to make new glasses. These recycled sheets also look particularly beautiful in combination with the Colours of Nature materials and UNIQUE acetate scraps.
The result is a unique pair of glasses in which you can not only see the beauty of nature, but sometimes even feel it: with materials such as seeds or feathers, a slight texture can be felt on the surface.
It is important to note that natural materials can fade or change colour when exposed to UV light. To ensure the longevity of your ‘Colours of Nature’ glasses, they should not be exposed to direct sunlight (e.g. in a shop window or an overheated car in full sunlight) or excessive heat, and should not be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath.
With glasses from the ‘Colours of Nature’ collection, you are not only wearing a piece of craftsmanship, but also a piece of natural history and a tribute to the beauty of our environment – uniquely preserved, handmade and with a very personal touch.
