FUNK/SCHUSTER
"Statement is our statement, quality is our hobbyhorse -
the manufactory is our passion."
The whole Story
It all began on 15 July 1992, when Dieter Funk founded "FUNK in case" in Munich, a company specialising in unusual and high-priced cases. However, this was not enough for everyday needs. Dieter therefore continued to work as an optician in Leopoldstraße - a decision that proved to be a stroke of luck. On the last day of his employment, Sashee called to give him her measurements for a pair of glasses she needed.
Dieter fell in love with her voice and decided to call her at the weekend. After hours of conversation, they spontaneously arranged a blind date, which took place the next day at Café Reitschule in Schwabing. This marked the first "fusion", as it was here that two kindred spirits met, who from then on went their separate ways, not only privately but also professionally.
The journey is the destination
Sashee and Dieter gained their first experience in the fashion industry with extravagant sunglasses - almost unwearable at first, but the ravers of the techno movement in the 90s became the most loyal fans of the FUNK sunglasses collection.
From there, they ventured into the world of fun sports with their own skate and snowboard teams and presented at funky stands at the ISPO sporting goods trade fair. Dieter lived out his passion for music and, in addition to selling sunglasses, also worked as a globally sought-after DJ. This influence characterised the collection - crazy, funky, innovative and eye-catching.
In 2001, FUNKroyal marked Dieter Funk's first foray into the world of corrective frames - a collection that combined quality with seriousness, but always retained Funk's characteristic extravagance. Since 2014, the Dieter Funk brand has stood for traditional craftsmanship and the highest quality standards. The timeless models are manufactured with sustainability in mind and are characterised by their ability to be repaired over a lifetime.
Sashee Sashee's own journey as a brand began in 2008 when she inspired Dieter with her concept for an eyewear collection dedicated to her father. Sashee Schuster and "Daddycated Eyewear" were born - a completely retro-inspired collection with panto shapes, keyhole bridges and real rivets reminiscent of the glasses of her youth.
In 2010, Sashee embarked on a completely new path. She printed microfibre cloths for a charitable art project and, with a lot of improvisation, created the first eyeglass lamination. Fascinated by this art, Sashee began to experiment herself by embedding spices, flowers, feathers, grasses and fabrics in acetate.
The idea was born to integrate the colours of nature into their new "Colours of Nature" collection. The art of lamination is still being perfected today, and the most beautiful eyewear models are the unique pieces, UNIQUES. They are created intuitively like works of art and then unfold their effect as eyewear.
Since 2008, Dieter Funk and Sashee Schuster have been making all their eyewear models by hand in their own eyewear factory.
Spectacle makers with a passion
Founding her own eyewear manufactory changed everything. Their mission is to save the craft of spectacle making, which is almost extinct in Germany, from oblivion! Even if the beginnings of Sashee and Dieter's eyewear manufactory were sometimes bumpy and they made mistakes - be it launching new types of temples or materials on the market too early - they always took a chance.
Today, they live acetate and feel it with all their senses. They work with a team of spectacle makers that they are very proud of. Their manufactory produces transparent and sustainable "Made in Germany" eyewear by hand. Many of their optical customers and end consumers have already visited the manufactory and witnessed how time-consuming it is to make a pair of glasses.
