The FUNK recycling acetate

We started recycling our acetate waste over eight years ago - at a time when hardly anyone was thinking about it.

The special thing about our process: everything happens directly on site. Our acetate residues are not transported halfway around the world by ship - no! We keep them in-house.

We carry out the entire recycling process in our factory. There is no shorter way! The recycled material is reused directly for new frames. So the entire cycle stays with us. A smaller CO2 footprint is hardly possible.

Even the chips produced during milling are reprocessed into ‘new’ material.

How is that feasible? We often hear this question. The answer lies in customised machines that we have invested in specifically for this process. Added to this is the knowledge we have gained from one of the leading experts in the global acetate market.

We are proud of this: as a manufacturer and brand, we can boast an almost 100% closed-loop economy. This is unique - not only in Germany, but probably also in Europe and worldwide.

A visible sign of genuine recycling is the less than perfect surface of the material - proof of a genuine second, third or fourth life. Slight differences in colour between the recycled boards are also normal and stand for the authenticity of our process.

Uniqueness is our claim, with our recycled material as well as with our eyewear.

100% in-house recycling, 100% independence, 100% zero waste

Due to our constant commitment to running our company as sustainably as possible, we were nominated for the German Sustainability Award in 2024. The decisive factor was our handling of raw materials such as cellulose acetate. Real recycling, zero waste, and all in-house.

Innovation

Manufacturer of acetate sheets

Since the end of 2024, FUNK has also been a manufacturer of acetate sheets!

This was made possible by machines specially manufactured for this process, which we were able to purchase and which are now in our factory. We also have the necessary expertise, which we acquired from one of the world's leading acetate experts.

As already mentioned, we can press the offcuts from CNC milling into new sheets.

However, we can also manufacture sheets in other ways:

  • from new acetate granulate and colour pigments
  • from acetate films that are printed, layered and pressed using a specific process (this produces beautiful three-dimensional effects)
  • a combination of granulate and film is also possible.

It is fascinating to try out new colour combinations and then see the finished acetate plate! Endless combination possibilities – pure creativity! And, of course, absolute exclusivity in terms of the colours we can incorporate into our eyewear collection!
