in-house Recycling-Acetate - new colours UNIQUE recycled
Acetate is a fantastic material and has been used since the 1950s to make glasses, combs and buttons. This natural material made from cotton has many wonderful properties – among other things, it can be processed like wood, repolished and recycled perfectly!
A lot of waste is produced in a spectacle factory: we mill the inner and outer shapes of spectacles from a sheet. This leaves us with waste and a lot of shavings. We have been recycling this waste for over 8 years and, thanks to a service provider in Europe, have had new sheets made.
Since the beginning of this year, we have been able to do this in-house. And we are going even further – through various thermoplastic test runs, we have managed to compress the shavings into new acetate sheets for new glasses! The result is always a surprise, because of course a wide variety of colours are processed and the shavings always look ‘whitish’ at first. Only in the new sheet do they develop their full colour splendour.
Here we present our two new recycled acetate colours:
These are granulated scraps that are left over from the production of the unique UNIQUE series, which Sashee Schuster and her team laminate with natural materials such as flowers, grasses, silk, feathers, seeds, etc. in acetate. By the way, we also make jewellery from the scraps!
