Aetera - Celion®
For pre-orders !
With a name reminiscent of the ancient Greek word for ‘ether’ and the Latin word for ‘eternity,’ this model represents the immortality of matter. The AETERA is our symbol of the eternal cycle: what was once waste is transformed into something lasting thanks to Celion® material.
A design that shows attitude. An iconic panto shape that combines intellect and casualness. The characteristic keyhole nose bridge gives the frame a classic vintage touch and ensures a comfortable fit. Questions and answers about our PHOENIX PROJECT.
The FUNK PHOENIX Project
The FUNK PHOENIX Project stands for the radical transformation of waste into aesthetics.
- At its heart is Celion®, a material developed in collaboration with IMEKO Chile that is obtained from recycled cigarette filters.
- We close the loop at our factory in Kinsau by directly recycling all internal acetate scraps and milling chips. This is our recycled acetate.
- Every pair of glasses from the FUNK PHOENIX PROJECT is therefore a statement for genuine circular economy without compromising on design.
Material purity of Celion® material
The Celion® material used in our glasses is a highly pure cellulose acetate.
In the patented recycling process developed by IMEKO , all harmful substances and odours are completely removed, resulting in a completely odourless and skin-friendly material.
Celion® material complies with strict EU regulations (EC No 1907/2006) and does not contain any substances of very high concern (SVHC) above the limit value of 0.1%.
See REACH compliance (link)
Free of harmful substances:
Based on chemical analyses by Bureau Veritas/Cesmec, IMEKO certifies that critical substances such as lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic are well below detectable limits.
Skin compatibility:
Celion® material is formulated with biocompatible plasticisers, making it safe for direct skin contact. Odour neutrality: PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) such as naphthalene or anthracene are not detectable (< 0.5 mg/kg), which guarantees absolute purity and odourlessness.

Cleaning glasses made of Celion® material
You can care for your Celion® glasses just like any other high-quality acetate glasses. An ultrasonic bath or lukewarm water with a drop of neutral detergent is ideal. Tip: Use a soft microfibre cleaning cloth for daily cleaning. Avoid aggressive chemicals or alcohol-based disinfectants to preserve the shine of the surface.
Information for opticians - Celion® material
Processing: The material can be processed in the same way as high-quality standard acetate.
Glazing: We recommend gently heating the centre section for glazing; the material has excellent dimensional stability.
Origin: 100% made in Germany – handmade in Kinsau
Every pair of PHOENIX glasses is manufactured from the first plate to the final polish at the FUNK eyewear factory in Kinsau, Germany. We rely on traditional craftsmanship: each front is precisely milled and polished by hand to a high gloss in a process that takes several days.
Our in-house recycling (the cycle)
The PHOENIX Project combines external upcycling with our proven internal recycling process. All acetate shavings and sheet offcuts produced during milling are carefully collected and sorted by type at our factory in Kinsau.
These valuable resources are shredded, filtered and pressed into new, high-strength acetate sheets without the addition of new plastics.
This creates a unique material appearance that reflects the history of its creation in every shade of colour.
Design & uniqueness
- The use of internally recycled acetate creates random colour structures that cannot be reproduced by machine.
- Every pair of glasses made from this material is truly unique – as individual as the scraps from which it was created.
- In combination with the new Celion® material, we are setting new standards for the aesthetics of sustainable eyewear fashion.
